5 Songs that Fuel Seasonal Depression

Via Pinterest

It’s officially September, and I’ve traded in my linen pants and billowy tops for light jackets and jeans. That can only mean one thing: Fall is upon us. Yes, I know, the Autumnal Equinox isn’t technically until the 22nd of September, but the sun is already setting earlier, the leaves are starting to change, and the New York City air nips at my exposed skin after dark. So to me, it’s already fall.

Unfortunately for many, with fall comes seasonal depression. Although fall is one of my favorite seasons, I still trade in my upbeat house music for more melancholy tunes (what can I say, I like to wallow in my feelings). As I look at the playlists I’ve made in past years, I see a few songs that never leave my rotation. These are the songs that I think are the perfect blend of “sad girl fall” and the Rory Gilmore-esque romanticization of back-to-school.

Swedish Girl - Saga Faye

“Summer never lasts/

Now the birds move south/

I'm still at the job/

That I never liked”

Master of None - Beachhouse

“Jack of all trades/

Master of none/

Cry all the time/

'Cause I'm not having fun”

I Am All That I Need / Arroyo Seco / Thumbprint Scar - Fleet Foxes

“I am all that I need/

And I'll be till I'm through/

And I'm light on my feet/

Good to be without you”

Lone - Tyler, The Creator

“Mom callin' and callin', I'm on my way to a show/

I answer, she cryin' sayin' Sadie is dyin'/

The doc said she only had a week for us to speak/s

Before she deceased, ‘cause cancer was just eating her cheeks up”

soleil, soleil - pomme

“Retrouver le soleil/

Qui nous manque/

Qui va brûler toutes nos peines/

Le soleil qui nous hante/

Oh reviens soleil, soleil”

English translation:

“Find the sun again/

That we miss/

That will burn all of our sorrows/

The sun that haunts us/

Oh come back sun, sun”
