BROCKHAMPTON Revived?: A Look at Geezer and Blush

In January 2022, rap boy-band BROCKHAMPTON dissolved after nine albums and six years in the spotlight. Fans were devastated at the abrupt ending of the band. BROCKHAMPTON’s frontman, Kevin Abstract, led the band into oblivion, releasing his own album, The Family, under BROCKHAMPTON’s name alongside the band’s final album, TM.
Based on the heartbreaking lyrics from Abstract on BROCKHAMPTON’s final two albums, fans could easily tell that he was taking the band’s loss hard. However, in the heat of mourning, Abstract came out with something new… something familiar.
In the beginning of the summer, Kevin Abstract and his longtime collaborator, Dominic Fike, announced their new single, “Geezer,” out June 12. Abstract announced that this single was the first track off his new album, Blush, out June 27. The last time Abstract and Fike had collaborated was on Abstract’s 2019 single, “Peach,” which remains Abstract’s highest streamed solo song to date.
Once Blush was released, fans realized that the album’s collaborative nature was very reminiscent of BROCKHAMPTON, featuring artists such as Love Spells, Truly Young, SoGone SoFlexy, Danny Brown, Quadeca, and ex-BROCKHAMPTON member Ameer Vann. The album also features rising voices from Houston, where Abstract resides. Dedicated to representing several different voices and perspectives, Abstract’s commitment to collaboration clearly transcended the BROCKHAMPTON era, proving that the band’s mission isn’t dead-- it’s evolving.
Through all of this, one true collaboration emerged from the Blush project. On June 5, one week before the release of “Geezer,” Abstract posted the music video for the track on his Instagram, captioning the post “KEVIN ABSTRACT AND DOMINIC FIKE ARE GEEZER.” The video was also posted to YouTube with the same caption. Blush also debuted another Abstract track featuring Fike called “Maroon.” About a week after the release of Blush, Abstract and Fike released their third collaboration, the surprise addition to Blush, “Doggy.” The song credits the artist Geezer alongside features from Love Spells and Truly Young.

So what’s to come of this new collaboration? The duo are slated to perform at Tyler, The Creator’s annual music festival, Camp Flog Gnaw, this November. Additionally, more music seems to be on the way for these two, as their collaborating has only just started. With two incredible, innovative talents like Fike and Abstract, one can only assume that Geezer will be a smash hit. And if Geezer is any indication, Kevin Abstract hasn’t just moved on from BROCKHAMPTON-- he’s building on it.
